And Gerasimov biography

By the anniversary of the birth of the messenger of Mosk. All scientific and pedagogical activities of Y. Gerasimov are inextricably linked with Moscow University. Here he studied, graduated from graduate school and went from a chemical laboratory drug to a professor, head of the Department of Physical Chemistry, which he unearthly led for about 30 years, from a year and almost until the end of his life.

Gerasimov was born in the city of Valdai, the Novgorod region in the family of a doctor. After graduating from the gymnasium in the year, he becomes a student of the chemical department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University. The scientific interests of Y. Gerasimov decided when he was still a student. The first scientific works of Y. Gerasimov, made with his thoroughness and grace inherent in him, were devoted to the receipt of chemically pure salts and the study of equilibrium in water-salt systems.

These studies made it possible to formulate many important patterns of salts of alleys from aqueous solutions. In the years, Y. Gerasimov develops an independent direction of experimental thermodynamic studies - the study of heterogeneous equilibrium condensed phases with gases in order to determine the constants necessary for theoretical calculations of pyrometallurgical processes.

In the year, Yakov Ivanovich Gerasimov summarized these works in his doctoral dissertation "Thermal dissociation of metal sulfides." A few years earlier, in Krestovnikov, a three -volume monograph “Chemical thermodynamics in non -ferrous metallurgy” was published, which at that time was considered an encyclopedia of practical chemical thermodynamics in the city during the Great Patriotic War Y.

Gerasimov, prescribed in the year. Upon returning to Moscow, Y. Gerasimov with his students and assistants continued to work in the field of metallurgical thermodynamics. The main scientific task of this time is the search for heat -resistant materials necessary for new technology. To this end, the method of heterogeneous equilibriums studied thermodynamic properties and phase equilibrium of ferrites, tungsten, molybdates and some simple oxides.

Moving in the year of the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University to a new building on the Lenin Mountains significantly improved the conditions for scientific work at Moscow University. This circumstance to a large extent contributed to the creation of fundamentally new original methods of thermodynamic research in the led by Gerasimov laboratory.

The beginning of the use of high -temperature electrochemical elements for thermodynamic study of metal alloys, individual substances and solutions with components of various chemical nature, the first and ionization studies of the volatility of substances were first developed, measurements of the volume properties of solutions and the methodology of purification of substances were first established.

The obtained numerical data contributed not only to the development of thermodynamic and statistical theory of solutions, the study of the nature of chemical bonds in crystals and liquids, but also served as the basis for solving practical problems in various areas of new technology. Thus, the task of creating the scientific foundations of materials science was solved. Gerasimov published more scientific works, under his leadership about 40 candidate dissertations were defended, five of his students became doctors of science.

In the city of the scientific work of Ya. Gerasimova, his development as a scientist, is inseparable from the pedagogical activity, which he has been engaged throughout his labor biography. For many years, Yakov Ivanovich gave a lecture at the Chemical Faculty of Moscow State University at a general course of physical chemistry and special courses “Selected heads of chemical thermodynamics” and “Thermodynamics of solutions” the last course formed the basis of the textbook of the same name.

On these discreet in form, but deep in the content of lectures, several generations of outstanding scientists who successfully work in various fields of chemistry grew. Gerasimov paid a lot of attention to theoretical and philosophical problems of chemical thermodynamics, history and methodology of teaching physical chemistry, took care of improving the system of teaching physical chemistry in higher education.

He is one of the authors and the editor of the fundamental two -volume textbook “Physical Chemistry”, the author and editor of a series of translations into Russian of foreign textbooks and monographs in physical chemistry. The authority of Yakov Ivanovich among leading world specialists in the field of physical chemistry was extremely high. This was also facilitated by a large scientific and organizational work, which he led for many years.

He was awarded many orders and medals of the USSR. The success of the leadership of various scientific groups and organizations was determined by the special qualities of I. to his honor, he never solved the problems in the life of the department or laboratory exclusively administrative means. His democracy, amazing tact in combination with common sense, respect for the dignity of his colleagues, encouraging and soft patronage of their scientific undertakings - these are the attractive character traits that highly valued by everyone who surrounded Yakov Ivanovich.

The ability of J. Gerasimov to listen to the interlocutor was amazing and, as a rule, after communicating with him, it was possible to find decisions that now seem faithful. Wise, calm, friendly, but fundamental and persistent when he was convinced of his own right, while invariably showed special scrupulousness in situations associated with conjunctural considerations or personal benefits - this is how we remember this beautiful scientist, teacher, man.
